As the Emerging Leaders Program Director for New Leaders, I had the pleasure of facilitating during the 2014-2015 program year when Mario Ivancic was one of our participants. Mario was one of our outstanding leaders during the year and I am pleased to highlight some of his strengths.
Our participants are assessed in four standard areas and Mario showed strength in all of them: Personal, Instructional, Culture, and Adult/Team Leadership. In the personal standard area he interacted positively while leading his team. He accepted feedback and used it to grow his leadership skills, he exercised sound judgment before drawing conclusions, and built level of trust with his team and his ELP peers. In the area of instruction, he developed an outstanding SMART goal and excelled at anticipating the needs of his team in order to reach the goal. He developed visionary strategies that helped his team to realize their potential, as well as the potential of each and every student. Mario established a sense of urgency with his team, which is the cornerstone of achieving competency in the culture standard. He was driven to reach his goal, was able to prioritize, and performed effectively under stressful conditions. Finally, in the area of adult/team leadership, Mario excelled at building the leadership capacity of his team. He realized that a leader needs to understand and develop strengths of his team if he is going to positively impact student achievement. I was pleased with his ability to inspire confidence, lead by example, and motivate his team to become leaders.
Mario was an excellent example for others in our program. He grew from a classroom teacher to a school leader during the year in our program. He exemplified the type of teacher who developed the leadership skills we need as we look for those who can transform schools, drive instructional change, seize responsibility, and build relationships with others.
